Stray ThreadsSTRAY THREADS…

Sue Schillig
Stray Threads,

August is our summer potluck.  Hoping to see all of you and your yummy goodies!  Lots of quilty things happening this month. Elk Farm quilt show and the Lorain County Fair come to mind. Usually entries must be registered by the 10th, but check the website.

I’ve actually been working on a new baby quilt, such a pleasure, and took advantage of some summer fabric sales.  Getaway weekend registration is now open, a weekend of sewing at the Bertram Inn is delightful.  Enjoy the rest of summer. Piecefully, Sue

Meeting Minutes

MEETING MINUTES
The August Picnic will begin at 6:30 pm.  Please bring a dish to share.

President MaryAnn Grayson called the meeting to order at 7:08.  We had 3 visitors this evening.  MaryAnn asked if there were any additions/corrections to the minutes.  Karen Jackson moved to accept as printed in the newsletter and Vicki Morris seconded. Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

Community Service:  Kathy Spencer turned in 2 quilts and Barb King donated several pillowcases.  Thank you so very much!

Programs:  This evening our own Kim Montagnese spoke to us about quilting and zentangling.  Who knew it was that easy?!  With just a few lines, curves, and dots…..a zentangle is born.  She showed quilts that were made spotlighting zentangling.  What a great and fun program.  Visit Tanglepatterns.com and Zentangle.com for more.

Fat Quarters:  Mary Lou has lots of fat quarters to pass out.  Thank you everyone for participating.>

Old Business:

MaryAnn gave a report on what a fun time was had on the bus trip to NQA in Columbus.  She also talked about the NEORQC getaway in Feb. 2014.

Joanne Palun brought tickets for the St. Joseph Raffle Quilt on display.

Kaye Koler said the quilt car is about 65% complete.  There will be a 07/20 get together to fit panels to the car.

Julie Bragg passed out the postcards and entry forms for the quilt show.

Announcements:

Sad news. Wanda Torres has passed away.  Rita Taylor’s husband passed away and Carol Stomieroski’s  husband  passed away. Georgia Forbush is having surgery on 07/18 and Fran Chapman on 07/29.

he French Creek Nature Center will have the “Trail Magic Weekend at True North”  from August 22-25, 2013.  This exhibit will be dedicated to Emma Gatewood who was the first woman to solo thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67. Mary Ann is helping out per the request of Bette Lou Higgins, Artistic Director.

I don’t know where the summer has gone!! August – where was June??

I am trying to get labels put on the eleven quilts in order to mail them out.  I still plan on having an “HOB Workshop” to make nine patches to get donations at our quilt show.  I’ll be asking which days of the week work best for most of us.  I’ll be asking at our meeting this Thursday.  If you can’t make it feel free to email me your choices.

Hope to see quite a few of you at the workshop.

quilts of valor KayeUpdate…… QUILTS OF VALOR

Well, I’m plugging away at getting the quilts that have been returned to me quilted. After some discussion, I will be holding onto those that are finished between now and the October show, so they can be displayed in the show for the quilts of valor display. I will need help binding some as I finish them. If anyone would like to step up to the plate to quilt one or two, it would certainly be a huge help to me as well as the guild so we will have lots to display at the show.

Thank you!

Kaye Koler

bright ideaBRIGHT IDEA – Thread Storage
Teri Barile

Have you ever spent money on a storage box for spools  or one of those wooden spool holders? If you have, you know that you usually can’t fit spools side by side. It’s like whoever designed it, never actually had a spool or cone of thread in their hand.  Anyway, I have been trying to figure out an acceptable to me way to store my thread cones and still be able to store them according to brand/fiber and have them be neat and easily accessible. I think that I have found a way.

drawerI bought this modular drawer, that is 7” deep. This one is 24” wide, but they are also available as 12”.

Since I want the thread to stay in place, not fall over or slide around, I wanted to think of a way to keep them in place once they were in the drawer.

bottle capI hopefully have solved the problem by gluing a bottlecap to the bottom of the drawer.  It is just the right size and fits right inside the bottom of the cone.  I think this will work!  Just another bright idea and a way to while away a Saturday evening when you don’t have a life…  🙂

outdoor festivalThe Ohio Outdoor Quilt Festival returns August 10th from 10AM to 5 PM and we are hoping you will join us for the day.  Quilts will be hanging from our barns, the gift shops will be open, lunch will be served and there will be wagon rides to pastures to see the elk.

For those of you who wish to share quilts, there are more details on our web page.

There are two ways you can help us spread the word about the quilt show.

  1. Go to our Face Book page and “like” it.  It would be lovely if you would also add it to your own Face Book pages to share with others.                          https://www.facebook.com/OhioOutdoorQuiltFestival
  2. Share our website with others who might be interested.               www.OhioOutoorQuilt.com      Hoping to see you on the 10th of August,

Melinda
