Meeting Minutes: On April 14, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo officially welcomed members to the first meeting of 2022.

Program:  Tonight, we welcomed Sharon McConnell, the Color Girl.  Color Girl Quilts is a small online shop that strives to give you a boutique shopping experience right from the comfort of home. Sharon is a Colorful Quilter who likes to explore new techniques, never fears a challenge, and make quilts that that she LOVES.

Sharon is here tonight to share her passion for the art and craft of quilting and to cheer us on by celebrating color, new ideas, and taking on challenges.  The show and tell was fantastic and Sharon was a breath of fresh air.  Her fabrics and products were unique and loved by everyone!  If you missed Sharon’s presentation, make sure to check out her online shop at https://colorgirlquilts.com.

President’s Report:  Chris began by thanking everyone who helped her at the guild’s booth at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo in Akron last week.   Chris shared that the raffle made just under $400.

Chris went on to note that it is her desire that the guild host an annual quilt.  The years of the quilt show she would love a more formal or “fancy” quilt and in the off years a simple, utilitarian, quilt as we have this year.  Chris noted that she is looking for a pattern and for volunteers to make the 2023 raffle quilt, which will also be the quilt for the 2023 LCP Quilt Show.  Chris noted that the 2023 quilt needs to be completed by April 1, 2023 so it is ready for the 2023 Sewing/Quilting Expo.  See me with questions and if you would like to take on this challenge and help the guild.

Finally, Chris shared that the Guild’s 2023 Quilt Show dates are confirmed and booked.  Our show will be September 15, 16, and 17th, with setup being on Thursday, September 14th which would normally be our meeting day.  Over the next few months Chris will be talking more and more about the show and start recruiting people to help me on the Quilt Show Committee.  If you reviewed the previous newsletter, she detailed some of the things we will need help with. Starting planning what quilts you would like in the show.

Approval of the Minutes:  The March minutes were distributed electronically by Kelly Grace.  Hearing no changes or corrections, the minutes were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report and all financial documents of the guild are filed for audit and can be made available for review upon request of the guild treasurer, Lori Quinones.

Committee Reports: The membership heard reports from all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

Unfinished Business:  In Sue’s absence, Chris distributed some of the remaining t-shirt orders for the guild and shared that although we are not taking more guild t-shirt orders for a few months, you can order a guild shirt directly from Eye Candy Embroidery.  You can contact the owner Tina Harmon by one of the following ways:  (1) Message her through her Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/EyeCandyEmbroidery or (2) email her at eyecandyembroidery@me.com.

Announcements:  Chris shared information about upcoming quilt shows so that we can support other guilds:

July 14th – July 16th from 10 am – 5 pm daily:  Quilts in the Garden, United Quilt Guild, Salem Centerplex, 1028 North Ellsworth Ave., Salem, Ohio 44460. $6 per day

September 8 – 10th:  Ohio’s Amish Country Quilt Festival, Mt. Hope Event Center, 8076 S.R. 241, Millersburg, Ohio 44654

September 30th from 10 am – 6 pm and October 1st from 10 am to 4 pm:  Streetsboro Quilt Guild, Faith Baptist Church, 9890 S.R. 43 (Frost Road), Streetsboro, Ohio.

Upcoming Guild Programs and workshops:

• June: Day is our Annual Judy Riggle Community Sew Day.  Evening Program:  Quilter’s Fancy with Cindy Oravecz.   Cindy will be vending and presenting a fabulous show-n-tell.
• July:  Day is our annual Christmas in July Sew Day.  Evening:  Summer Potluck!
• August:  Day is a Quilting Workshop taught by Laura Nolletti.  Laura will be teaching a quilt pattern by Krista Moser (more details to follow). Again, the cost of the workshop is only $15. In the evening Laura will presenting a trunk show of Krista Moser quilts and patterns.  Fun Fun!!
• September: OPEN (several invitations are out, just waiting on return messages.)
• October:  On Hold for Ginger Mangie presenting a Day Workshop and Evening program.
• November:  Dee Hart of Dee’s Quilted Treasures is going to teach a quilting workshop during the day (pattern and details to follow).  In the evening Dee will present a trunk show of Deb Tucker quilts and all the various tools used to create her quilts.  Dee will also have patterns and tools available for purchase.
• December:  Sew Day.  Evening:  year-end potluck and celebration!

Show & Tell:   Was fabulous as always and it included a rainbow quilt and a hippy quilt!  You miss a meeting, you miss a lot!  Hope to see you next month.

By-Laws Section 8:  The Sunshine Committee shall notify members in case of illness or bereavement.  Cards will be sent; unless it is determined a blue basket is needed.

Blue Baskets:  When members lose a spouse or child, we support them by giving them fat quarters of fabric in their favorite colors.  The Sunshine Committee will supply the bag and card to be signed by the membership.

While the yard is nicely green (read that too wet to mow) I’ve been working on quilting or cooking projects.  I’m all ready for the class on Thursday and eager to get this one pieced together to see if it really turns out “plaidish”.  In the process I’ve discovered that fabric apparently breathes!  Many years ago, I began collecting fabric for watercolor quilts. I even made a few.  I’ve been working my way through all those lovely florals and thought this would be a way to finish them off.  Sadly, about all I can say toward those efforts is that the lid now will comfortably close!    It felt like I was using up a lot, but I’m left with a full bin still.  Next time, perhaps I can reduce it by half?

UFO Challenge

The 2022 UFO Challenge is on! HUGE jump to 55 (out of 395) finished items – 14% of the UFO’s are completed! If you cannot come to a meeting to show off your finish, please send me an email or post it in our Facebook group and let me know it’s a UFO so I can mark it down as complete. Good luck this year!

Fat Quarter Exchange
Lists were emailed out April 4th. Bags were passed out at the April meeting and will be due back by the August meeting – they can be turned in early though! I will sort everything and give it back to everyone at the end of the August meeting. Let me know if there are any questions.

Monthly Challenge
We had some great projects shown at the April meeting from our fat quarter trade. This was to be something (any size!) using the fat quarter you received and black and/or white fabric. We are going to do the crayon challenge again! I will have a bag of crayons, you choose 2 blindly and make something using those colors. We will have this due at the August meeting – I won’t be there in July.

Block Exchange 2022
8 members have signed up for the block exchange. Fabric has arrived and I will have it at the May meeting. Blocks will be due by the October meeting and tops or finished quilts done by the December potluck.

Double Nine-Patch Challenge

I’ve made a little Double Nine Patch, which metamorphosized into a Triple Nine Patch, which I’ll show & tell at the potluck. You all probably know what a double nine patch is, but I thought I’d show you an example in case you’d like to accept the Double Nine Patch Challenge.

LORAIN COUNTY SAFE HARBOR/GENESIS HOUSE: Provides temporary safe shelter, food, and support services to victims of domestic violence and their children.  Serves roughly 25,000 annually.

BLESSING HOUSE:  Founded in 2005 to house children, birth to age 12, when their parents are addressing their own crises.

May has arrived and brought Spring with her—I think.  There’s no guarantees with Ohio weather (smile).  May is also a month for remembering mothers, along with mother figures and other special women in our lives.  Here are just a few May highlights in US Women’s History:

• May 1, 1950 – Gwendolyn Brooks becomes the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, named Library of Congress’s Consultant in Poetry (later called Poet Laureate) in 1985
• May 5, 1938 – Dr. Dorothy H. Andersen presents results of her medical research identifying the disease cystic fibrosis at a meeting of the American Pediatric Association
• May 8, 1914 – President Woodrow Wilson signs a Proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day
• May 10, 1872 – Victoria Woodhull is nominated as the first woman candidate for U.S. president for the Equal Rights Party

Meeting Minutes: On March 10, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo officially welcomed members to the first meeting of 2022. 

Program:  Tonight, we welcomed Snuggled in Hope Quilts a non-profit organization who make quilts and more for Flying Horse Farms.  Penny Reeve shared that Flying Horse Farms is a magical camp for children with serious illnesses located on over 200 acres just outside of Mt. Gilead, Ohio.  It is a place where kids are free to be kids and being sick takes a backseat to having fun.   Penny shared that every child who visits the camp will leave with a quilt and a pillowcase.  Penny brought several quilt tops and kits for members to finish for the camp.  She shared that they are always accepting finished donations but the quilts must be certain size for the camp beds.  They request that they be 55″ x 65″ but if the quilt will shrink upon washing, she asks that you account for that and make it a little larger.  As you must wash the quilt before they can accept it.  Pillowcases need to be standard sized and constructed with new cotton fabric and the seams must be finished by either a serger or using a closed French seam.  She noted that don’t worry about matching the pillowcase to the quilt as they will not stay together.

President’s Report:   Chris reminded the group about the Plaidish Quilt Workshop sign-ups are due this month and in April.  $15 holds your spot and gets you the pattern and cutting instructions for this scrappy quilt. 

Chris also reminded everyone that she will be hosting a guild table at the Original Sewing & Quilt Show in Akron on April 7th, 8th, and 9th.  Chris will bring the finished quilt and raffle tickets to the April meeting so everyone can take photos and purchase quilts to re-sell.  REMINDER:  We do not hand out tickets.  If you wish to help us sell tickets you have to purchase the tickets to resell.

May:  Kathy Gordon from Kwilty Pleasures will be hosting a Scrappy Quilt Workshop during the Day and an evening trunk show.   The guild is paying the lion’s share of the costs but when you sign up you will be asked to secure your spot for $15.  You will receive a free pattern and there are no other costs.

June: Day is our Annual Judy Riggle Community Sew Day.  Evening Program:  OPEN…

July:  Day is our annual Christmas in July Sew Day.  Evening:  Summer Potluck!

Happy Spring fellow quilters!

A bit of good news to share regarding Quilts of Valor!

The QoV foundation has announced  the 300,000th quilt has been awarded to a veteran!  To commemorate this milestone they have sent each group leader a panel to be made into a quilt, and awarded as an honorary 300,000th QoV ! I am in awe that SO many Quilts of Valor have been awarded! I am also very pleased that our guild has had a part in those extraordinary numbers! Thank you to everyone who has given of their time and talents to this very worthy endeavor!

We are in the planning stages of resuming presentations !  More news to follow as it unfolds….

As I rest up and think back over the past week at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo, I realize that all too soon we will be planning our own 2023 Quilt Show.  There is so much that goes into a quilt show, it is never too soon to start planning.  As many of you know our long-time Quilt Show Committee Chairs have stepped down from their roles after many years of dedicated service.  It is time for a new group of volunteers to step up.  Over the coming months I will be asking for volunteers to be on the 2023 Quilt Show Committee so we can make our show a huge success.  We need to lockup volunteers for the following:

• Advertisement:  In print and social media, Selling ads for show program
• Create and oversee the printing of the paper show program for distribution at the show.
• Raffle Baskets: Collecting new and like new items and assembling baskets, oversee raffle
• Collect Quilt registration forms
• Create paper quilt labels, signs for each quilt with its story
• Show Setup and hanging quilts
• Show Tear down and returning quilts
• Sign in and collect quilts the morning of setup
• Sign out quilts the last day of show
• Designing the layout and floor plan for hanging quilts
• Oversee the renting of poles and curtains for hanging quilts and arranging for the pickup and return of this equipment. (Need panel va, or truck with flat bed, etc.)
• Recruiting 4 or 5 Vendors for our Vendor Mall
• Country Store: Collecting used or slightly used items for sale
• Running the store
• LCP Cafe: Food prep and selling snacks
• 2023 Raffle Quilt and selling tickets
• 2023 Quilt Show Postcard

This show cannot succeed without YOU.  A few people have stepped up to say they will help with some of the above, tasks, but I will depend on many others to make this a success.  If you have done these tasks in the past and want to help again, let me know.  If you are eager to help with any of the tasks as a first-time volunteer, great, let me know.  These are early days and not much needs done now, but I’m a planner.  I like to be prepared.  Time to get our committee of volunteers locked up.  Please consider helping make the show a success!

Meeting Minutes: On February 10, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo officially welcomed members to the first meeting of 2022. 

Program:  Tonight, we were entertained and wowed by Stephanie Feador.  Stephanie is many things, including a longarm quilter, online retail quilt shop owner, Facebook site manager, and Youtube personality.  Oh, and lest we forget, she is also a member of this quilt guild!   Besides sewing and quilting, Stephanie loves spending time with her family and small group of amazingly supportive friends who have all given her the courage to pursue my craft as a business.

Stephanie shared her story with us and presented a fabulous trunk show.  She also brought an impressive amount of shop haul for us to gaze upon and to purchase!  It was fantastic!  Thank you so much Stephanie!!  To learn more about Stephanie, visit her online shop at http://www.stephanies-stitches.com and/or watch her Youtube channel Stephanie’s Stitches. 

President’s Report:   Chris reminded the group that the guild will have a booth at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Akron, Ohio from April 7th to April 9th.  Chris indicated she would need volunteers to sit at the booth with her to sell raffle tickets and to talk about guild and distribute information.  Chris was taking sign-ups this evening. 

Chris also shared that the Township has raised the rent on the hall rather significantly, jumping from $125 a month to $200 a month.  Chris shared that the hall coordinator told her that they their expenses has doubled so they have to pass on the extra costs.  The hall coordinator also shared that the guild is still getting a very good rate as the general public pays $400 for 1/2 the hall on Thursdays, noting that we are only paying half of that rate.  Although Chris agrees that we are getting a discounted rate, Chris did not agree that this was a good deal for a non-profit quilt guild who provides community service to Lorain County and honors local veterans.  The hall coordinator was sympathetic but said that they have many other non-profits using the hall and everyone wants rock-bottom prices, and they simply cannot do it anymore. 

Chris noted that the cost of the hall now eats up 100% of our membership dues and that assumes we stay at around 95 members, which is pretty optimistic.  Therefore, the only way to maintain a healthy budget and to continue to stay in this fabulous hall is to have annual fundraisers, in addition to the bi-annual quilt show. Therefore, the ideal of having an annual quilt raffle, which Chris suggested earlier this year, is even more important.  The fundraisers are what pay for our programs and workshops. 

Approval of the Minutes:  The January minutes were distributed electronically by Kelly Grace.  Hearing no changes or corrections, the minutes were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report:  The treasurer’s report and all financial documents of the guild are filed for audit and can be made available for review upon request of the guild treasurer, Lori Quinones. 

Committee Reports: The membership heard reports from all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

Unfinished Business:  Sue Schillig continued taking T-Shirt orders. 
New Business:  None Reported.

Announcements:  A member shared that there will be an Antique Quilt Show at Weymouth Preservation Society Museum, 3314 Myers Road, in Medina, Ohio on Saturday March 26th, 12pm – 4pm.  The show is entitled the Art of Quilts & Coverlets.  The show will display multiple quilts, blankets and coverlets from the society’s collection and private collections. An admission donation of $5.00 is requested, and masks may be required so come prepared.

Upcoming Guild Programs and workshops:

March:  Penny Reeve from Snuggled in Hope Quilts, Inc., will present a program about their organization and their partnership with Flying Horse Farms.  It is sure to be an informative and wonderful evening.  Note that Penny will be bringing a few quilts that need quilted so if there are any volunteers, please step up to help the organization.

April:  Color Girl: All Things Quilts by Sharon McConnell.  Sharon will put on a slideshow presentation, real life trunk show, and yep, she will bring rulers, patterns, and fabric bundles to sell!!  Woo Hoo!!

May:  Kathy Gordon from Kwilty Pleasures will be hosting a Scrappy Quilt Workshop during the Day and an evening trunk show.   The guild is paying the lion’s share of the costs but when you sign up you will be asked to secure your spot for $15.  You will receive a free pattern and there are no other costs.

June: Day is our Annual Judy Riggle Community Sew Day.  Evening Program:  OPEN…

July:  Day is our annual Christmas in July Sew Day.  Evening:  Summer Potluck!

August:  Day is a Quilting Workshop taught by Laura Nolletti.  Laura will be teaching a quilt pattern by Krista Moser (more details to follow). Again, the cost of the workshop is only $15. In the evening Laura will presenting a trunk show of Krista Moser quilts and patterns.  Fun Fun!!

September: OPEN

October:  On Hold for Ginger Mangie presenting a Day Workshop and Evening program.

November:  Dee Hart of Dee’s Quilted Treasures is going to teach a quilting workshop during the day (pattern and details to follow).  In the evening Dee will present a trunk show of Deb Tucker quilts and all the various tools used to create her quilts.  Dee will also have patterns and tools available for purchase. 

December:  Sew Day.  Evening:  year-end potluck and celebration!  

Show & Tell:   This president and minute taker was so busy being amazed at the quilts and variety of projects shown tonight she failed to make a note of anything.  Not a bad problem to have!  We rock!!

UFO Challenge

The 2022 UFO Challenge is on! We already have 25 (out of 395) finished items! I’ve even finished a few items! If you cannot come to a meeting to show off your finish, please send me an email or post it in our Facebook group and let me know it’s a UFO so I can mark it down as complete. Good luck this year! Please remember if you haven’t turned in your $5 – goes toward prizes at the end of the year, I need this soon.

Fat Quarter Exchange

Sign ups will continue until April 1 for the 2022 exchange. That way I can send out a list for anyone that is looking for fabrics while at the Sewing Expo! Think about what color/theme you’d like to sign up for. We currently have 7 members signed up, the more people that participate, the wider selection of fabrics you’ll receive!

Monthly Challenge

If you are interested in the monthly challenge please bring a fat quarter and give it to me at the meeting – you will get a different one back for the challenge! You will be making something (any size!) using the fat quarter and black and/or white fabric. This will be due at the April meeting.

Block Exchange 2022

Is anyone interested in doing a block exchange? We currently have 8 members interested. Signups will close at the March meeting. I will be looking for a focus fabric for us to use for this challenge.

I’ve made a little Double Nine Patch, which metamorphosized into a Triple Nine Patch, which I’ll show & tell at the potluck. You all probably know what a double nine patch is, but I thought I’d show you an example in case you’d like to accept the Double Nine Patch Challenge.

BLESSING HOUSE:  Founded in 2005 to house children, birth to age 12, when their parents are addressing their own crises.

Happy March everyone!  I am looking forward to longer, warmer days, although I realize it is still winter.  A girl can dream, right?    Lately I’m finding it hard to focus on one project at a time and I’m jumping from this to that and back again to this.  I think my lack of concentration may be due to watching too much horrific news about the war in Ukraine.  It is so unsettling.  So, over the weekend I decided to unplug from the news and just create.  With the machine buzzing and humming as I create, I am reminded of a Richard Rogers song, In My Own Little Corner.  “In my own little corner, In my own little chair, I can be whatever I want to be.”  I like to change the lyrics to say, I can CREATE whatever I want to create. 

We are makers, creators of beautiful things.  I think I’m going to create a sunflower because it is the national flower of Ukraine.  May you spend your days creating and finding peace in the little things.

Meeting Minutes: On this January 13, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo officially welcomed members to the first meeting of 2022. 

Program:  Tonight, Linda Miller presented her Vintage Old Ladies trunk show.  Many of you know Linda as the Quilt Camp Director for Quilt Camp at Cedar Lakes, but Linda is also the owner of That’s Sew Special, a Longarm Quilting Studio, that began with crafts and wall hangings, then grew to encompass Longarm Quilting.  Linda’s trunk show was BEYOND fantastic!!  It was truly a sight to behold.  It was fascinating to learn the story behind some of the quilts and to see them reborn under Linda’s watchful eye!  Thank you for a fabulous show, Linda!

President’s Report:   During the President’s report, Chris outlined the 2022 program schedule as it stands to date:

New Business:  Chris shared that even though we are not having a Quilt Show this year, there will be a 2022 Quilt Raffle, which will start at the Original Sewing & Quilting show in Akron, Ohio this April 7th, 8th and 9th.  The 2022 quilt is being made by Julie Bragg, Chris Yoo, and MaryAnn Doucette.   Chris also noted that she will need help sitting at the table to sell raffle tickets.  If you sit for one 2-hour shift you get into the show for free.  Chris will have signup sheets at the February and March meetings. 

Announcements:  Julie Bragg shared some information about a local health challenge. 

Show & Tell:   Although the number of items was down this month, ladies and gentlemen you never cease to amaze me!!  So very exciting!!  Cannot wait until February!

Hello Lorain county piecemakers!

After some discussion, Quilts of valor has decided to hold off until spring for our next sew day. The national sewday is February 5th. But with Covid numbers being what they are we feel it’s better to be safe and wait till spring. Will keep you posted! in the meantime, stay safe and warm and hopefully Sewing! Happy Valentine’s Day my quilty friends!!  As I sat down to ponder my thoughts this crisp February morning, I realized that I had forgotten to announce my annual President’s Challenge for 2022.   I had decided that this year, instead of picking a theme or even a special project, my challenge to you is to CHALLENGE yourself to do something different, to get outside your creative comfort zone in 2022.  What do I mean? 

Take a class or teach yourself something brand new, something you have always wanted to do creatively, perhaps a new type of needlework or craft such as: wool applique, cross stitch, punch needle, knitting, embroidery (hand or machine), applique, paper piecing, etc. Enter your work in the local fair for the very first time.  Create a piece of artwork that’s intensely personal.  Something that has deep meaning to you. Make a quilt you have always wanted to make but just didn’t think you had it in you.

So, ladies and gents, my challenge to YOU in 2022 is to CHALLENGE YOURSELF CREATIVELY.  Stop doing the same old thing.  Go outside your comfort zone in 2022, even if only once.  Live bold, live the creative life, and quilt on!

On this stark white morning, with the sun glistening like diamonds, the ideas for quilts just seems to explode.  So for those of us with lots of projects, it is a very troubling time.  I’ve spent my morning getting some projects organized to bring to Sew Day, in the hopes of doing tedious tasks surrounded by friends.  Meanwhile, a couple months ago I led a program on organization.  Not my best strength, but oh well. Fortunately many of you had some great ideas.  Here is one I have which helps me to keep organized and the projects ironed and ready to go. I hang the finished and pressed top, backing and batting with binding on hangers.  When I’m ready to layer (I’m never “ready” to layer a quilt) everything is in one place and ready to go.  It might not make my projects finished in 2022, but at least the ones that are this far along are staring at me every time I open the closet.  Here’s hoping you are making great progress on your UFO’s for 2022.

Meeting Minutes: On this December 9, 2021, at 6:30 p.m., President Chris Yoo officially welcomed everyone to the December potluck and year-end celebration.

Program: Tonight we enjoyed what Chris called the Potluck, Pincushion, and Prize bonanza!  Chris shared that she was celebrating the end to a crazy year, noting that it was most definitely a year filled with both highs and lows.  Chris also took the opportunity to note that members should be very proud of what was accomplished at our 2021 Quilt Show.  It truly exceeded all of our expectations.

Before enjoying the wonderful feast that was laid before them, Chris shared that she was grateful for the fellowship of the members and for the nice group we had this evening to share a meal during this crazy time in history.  Chris wished everyone a wonderful, happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season, and a blessed new year.  Following the meal, Chris drew numbers and the very popular pincushion exchange commenced.  Chris also had 6 prize drawings that included everyone present.  The events seemed to be well received by everyone in attendance.

President’s Report:   Chris reported that she has sent out about a dozen emails and left about as many voice mails for teachers and prospective presenters to fill up our 2022 calendar.  She indicated she was starting to get some responses and hopes to let everyone know in January what she has lined up so far.  Chris shared there is a January program penciled in the books, but she needed to confirm it this weekend.  Finally, Chris reminded everyone to let her know if they have specific programs in mind.

Approval of the Minutes:  The November minutes were distributed electronically by Kelly Grace.  It was reported this evening that there were no changes or corrections required so the minutes were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report will be included in the newsletter and filed for audit.

Committee Reports: The membership heard reports from all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

Unfinished Business:  Although not in attendance tonight, Chris indicated that Sue Schillig reported in the newsletter that T Shirt orders will be taken in January and February.  There will be three styles to choose from and many colors.  There will be v-neck, crew neck and long sleeve crew neck available. Newsletter Update: January 1st, Val sent a Thinking of You card to Peggy Hughes. Karen Neuschaffer let us know Peggy was having a medical procedure at the end of December. We wish Peggy well.

UFO Challenge
Congrats to everyone that completed at least 1 item off their UFO list in 2021! Prizes will be handed out at the January meeting. Sing-ups are now open for the 2022 UFO Challenge. Please see me at the meeting with your list or you can email it to me no later than January 30th! $5 is requested to participate so that we can get prizes for the end of the year.

Fat Quarter Exchange
Sign ups will start in February for the 2022 exchange. Think about what color/theme you’d like to sign up for. The more people that participate, the wider selection of fabrics you’ll receive!

Monthly Challenge
Due by the January meeting is an object (any size or shape) using the selected fabrics as inspiration. We can do this one again in the future if there’s interest. I have an idea for January – will be due in March. If you are interested in this challenge please bring a fat quarter and give it to me at the meeting – you will get a different one back for the challenge!

Block Exchange 2022
Is anyone interested in doing a block exchange? I will have the last one we did (2013) with me at the meeting as an example.

Double Nine-Patch Challenge
I’ve made a little Double Nine Patch, which metamorphosized into a Triple Nine Patch, which I’ll show & tell at the potluck. You all probably know what a double nine patch is, but I thought I’d show you an example in case you’d like to accept the Double Nine Patch Challenge.

Happy New Year everyone!
First let me start out by saying thank you to everyone for your thoughts and ideas regarding sending quilts to Hancocks of Paducah for the hurricane victims. I have been in contact with them and they are no longer accepting quilts.   Never fear, I have a bunch of quilts ready to be delivered to our local charities!  If they haven’t been delivered by the January meeting they will be shortly.

A Better Christmas did end up picking up the stockings and pillow cases! They were thrilled with your generosity!

BLESSING HOUSE:  Founded in 2005 to house children, birth to age 12, when their parents are addressing their own crises.

March:  Penny Reeve from Snuggled in Hope Quilts, Inc., will present a program about their organization and their partnership with Flying Horse Farms.  It is sure to be an informative and wonderful evening.

Happy Fall Y’all!!!   First let me say WOWZA!!  What a fantastic quilt show we put on my quilty friends!!  Given the current state of Covid, the show was successful beyond my wildest dreams!!  I know I have said it already but I need to say it again.  A HUGE thank you to the quilt show committee and to everyone who volunteered during the show, and another HUGE thank you to everyone who entered a quilt or needlework item into the show.  To the volunteers who helped, please know that without you we could not have pulled this off.  No task was too small.  To everyone who entered an item to be displayed in the show, please know that it was loved and photographed and praised by hundreds of happy visitors.  The show would not have been the same without your talent.

I am so very blessed to be the president of this guild.  You guys make me proud!  I could go on for days telling you how much praise we received from other guilds and even a couple of NE Ohio needlework guilds.  Everyone was so amazed at the talent in our guild.  We signed up several new members during the show, and I hope a few of them are present at the October meeting!  To everyone who volunteered and/or entered an item into the show, be sure to pat yourself on the back.  Not only did we rock it, but friends, we hit a grand slam!!  THANK YOU ALL!!!

October   6…thanks, Sue Thornton and Karin Knox for letting us know about our member, Libby Betounes.  Libby’s husband passed away…I believe October 2.  A condolence card has been sent from the guild to Libby.   You may recall from the card the guild sent in June that Libby is at Abbewood.  1210 S. I will organize a blue bag to collect fat quarters on Thursday, October for Libby.  I believe Libby listed her favorite color as aquamarine.

Quilt Show

The Lorain County Piecemakers had their 5^th Quilt Show September 10^th-12^th, 2021 at New Russia Township Lodge, 46300 Butternut Ridge Rd.  Oberlin, Oh.

We had five Vendors; Mercantile on Main, Sew Creative Cottage, Serendipitee Novelties & Panels, The Crafty Ewe and My Essential Body Wear.

Admission was $5 with a free door prize ticket.  We had 482 people that attended.  The door prize was a Accu-cutter for fabric from Barnes Sewing Center along with some fabric.

The winner was a man and his wife from Lorain, who have been “quilting all their lives”.

We hung 205 quilts which was amazing. Some of the members have never participated in a Quilt Show before. I hope they enjoyed seeing their quilts hanging. Out of 82 members, 46 had quilts/quilt items in the Show.  We had 41 members enter large quilts (48” -115”), 28 members entered smaller quilts (48” and smaller) 18 members entered quilts and items for our 8 different challenges we had in the past two years.

Viewers’ Choice was awarded to Teri Walter for her beautiful, hand appliquéd and hand quilted “Baltimore Album” quilt.

“Quilts of Valor” had a display by Kaye Koler and raised $119.00 in donations.

Admissions took in $2,409.80 at admissions, Booklet adds $425.00 and booth rentals $278.45

Subtract all expenses ($2,629.92) for rental of room & quilt racks, printing, signs, clips/hangers and advertising, our profit was $483.33.  A big “Thank You” for Karen Neuschaefer for selling ads and creating the show booklets.

We had 42 beautiful baskets in the basket auction with many “Thanks” to Barb Spieker, Barb Cowger-Vilagi and Vicki Morris for putting the baskets together, with the members donating items and baskets.   Taking in $2,220.00, with an expense of $88.77. Resulting in a profit of $2,131.23

Country Store managed by Fran Weber, Peggy Hughes and Jean Tobias.   An excellent job of marketing our un-wanted material, new crafts and second-hand items, along with donations from the Grayson family, (from MaryAnn’s stash), they made a clear profit of $2,002.15

The “Raffle Quilt” was pieced by Julie Bragg and Kathryn French and long-arm custom quilted by Mary Ann Doucette.  Taking in $1,851.00 with $125.00 for ticket printing expenses leaving a profit of $1,726.00. Member, Dee Martin of Westlake, won the raffle quilt.

Refreshments were arranged by Genny Dangerfield.  The snacks and drinks were the maximum that we could provide this year because of taking extra precautions due to the virus variant.  Everyone is looking forward to the next show so we can offer our favorite recipes.

Expenses $219.84. Collected $185.50. Our extra soda and snacks will be used at our December Potluck.

Besides all the beautiful quilts and the people heading up the committees, the quilt show still cannot happen without volunteers that help set up and tear down. A special “Thank You” for the men that came to help.  We were hanging quilts by 9:30!! A big thank you for those who worked at the Admissions table, Basket Auction, Raffle Quilt ticket sales, White Gloves, Country Store, Refreshments and Quilts of Valor.   Members were very generous with their time and volunteered on one or more of the committees and filled one or more time slots.

We also owe Huge “Thank Yous” to Pam Scholle for being Treasurer, Lori Quinones for assisting Pam.  Val Watring for all the advertising and Chris Yoo for making signs, ribbons, boxes, vendor bags and seeing to many details we would never have thought of.  What an awesome group we have to work with.

We would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as co-chairs for the quilt show committee. After five shows, we have decided to step down. This will allow other people an opportunity to implement their ideas and innovations for future shows, so that we may continue to grow as a guild.  We will be here to support the new chairs moving forward. Once again, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve the guild and hope that the new chairs enjoy their time as much as we did.

Meeting Minutes: At 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo welcomed everyone and several guests and returning members.

Program:  The program this evening was presented by the Lorain County Fair’s Needlework Department Heads, Judy Pickworth, and our very own Ruth Groot.  The ladies talked all about the needlework barn at the fair and about the various categories and gave some tips and tricks on getting signed up correctly.  It was stressed that the deadline for entries was August 5th.  They also shared that the spinners and weavers would be helping with setup and judging this year and it was point out specifically that the weavers would be assigned to assist the quilt judge this year.  Ruth noted she will have sign-up sheets next month for anyone who can help at the fair.

President’s Report:   Chris took this opportunity to remind everyone that the quilt show would only be successful if everyone helps.  Chris stressed that she was not just talking about quilt entries and volunteering at the show, but also about members telling their family, friends, and casual acquaintances all about the show.  Chris noted that we need to get people interested in learning more about this guild of quilters so the community will come out and support us and see the gorgeous items we have been making!  Chris noted that the show was the guild’s biggest fundraiser and that we only have it every couple of years; so, please help us break an all-time attendance record this year!

Chris also reminded everyone to sell quilt raffle tickets for the beautiful quilt and to make sure to set aside time on one or more of the 3 days of the show to volunteer.  Hosting a 3-day quilt event is a lot of work, but it is SO rewarding.  Come help us promote the art of needlework!

Approval of the Minutes:  The minutes from the June meeting were distributed in the Newsletter by email and posted on the webpage.  Hearing no changes were necessary to the minutes, they were approved as distributed.

Treasurers Report:  The treasurer’s report was filed for audit.

Committee Reports: The membership heard reports from all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

Unfinished Business:  There was a brief discussion about the status of getting new guild t-shirts which was basically a reminder to Chris.  Chris assured the group it was “on the list” but unless someone else wanted to take the lead, the t-shirts would have to wait until after the quilt show.

New Business:  Chris brought up the topic of whether or not they should have hot food at the quilt show as they have done in the past or serve pre-packaged refreshments and snacks, given the current Covid situation. The group took an informal vote on whether or not to serve hot food or just pre-packaged snacks and refreshments like coffee and pop.  The pre-packaged snacks option was the clear winner.  It was noted that the volunteers could setup crockpots and things in the kitchen so they could eat hot food during the day, but it was stressed that everyone is responsible for their own food and only volunteers would have access to the kitchen as it will be off limits to attendees and guests.

Announcements:  None noted.

Show & Tell:  Just when you think we cannot do better—WHAM!!  We surprise even ourselves!  The show-n-tell was fantastic.  We had mystery quilts, baby quilts, tote bags, stockings, 3-yard quilts, table runners, wedding quilts, double-sided quilts, a Giant quilt and so much more.  Seriously quilters—we rock!!!

Next meeting:  August 12th @ 7:00 p.m. BUT it is highly recommended that you come earlier as we have invited many other guilds who may have members who would like to meet our special guest lecturer, Deb Strain, Moda designer extraordinaire.
Note that due to the current state of the pandemic, face masks are recommended, but at the time of this writing, masks are still optional.  Use your own judgement, but be safe and conscious of others around you.  If you are not feeling well—stay home.

It’s that time of year where we start collecting dues for the next year. Please submit a form when you pay your dues so we can try and keep things updated.  In the month of August, please contact Marilyn Novak to pay your dues. BLESSING HOUSE:  Founded in 2005 to house children, birth to age 12, when their parents are addressing their own crises.

Because I have a need to plan ahead, I’m already thinking of our December potluck and a fun event for us to enjoy!  I would like to host a mystery pin cushion exchange.  Everyone makes a fun pin cushion and places it inside a brown paper bag.  Everyone who participates will get to choose a bag to take home on December 9th!  The one thing we will not have to worry about is someone stealing your pin cushion—I’m not a fan of stealing as part of exchanges.  You get to keep the mystery pin cushion you pick first.  Let’s have fun with this!  If you google fun pin cushions on the internet you will be overwhelmed with fabulous designs!

I’m giving you over 3 months to plan and make a pin cushion. So, let’s see how many participants we can get!  The more the merrier!  If you need inspiration, check out this video from Lori Holt.  However, you do NOT have to make a pincushion like these.  This is just an inspirational video!  Simple, fancy, vintage or modern. Let’s make this FUN!!  I, for one, cannot wait to see all the pin cushions!!

The idea of the Strip Quilt Challenge is to use up scraps, in this case, strips. Helen says she has plenty to get shed of, so you may want to contact her if you run low. The deadline is the August meeting, there will be a drawing for a prize, and it will be fun to see what recycling yields. By the way, you don’t have to use jelly roll strips, just whatever strippy beings you have and are keen to use up:

Hey, gals, this month is the drawing for the Scrap Quilt Challenge, so here’s your chance to get shed of leftovers that make you feel guilty plus win $$$. There are other challenges, too, including the Checkerboard Challenge and Attic Windows, and the actual quilt show is in September so this would be the time on which to get a wiggle (notice how I avoided ending the sentence with a preposition; oh, yeah, I’ve still got it, for sure).

Quilt Show, September 10th-12th, 2021

Remember your Quilt Show ENTRY forms.They are due at this August meeting. The booklet has to be at the printers by August 30.  That only gives us 2 weeks to have the quilt lists, ads, and layout done. Please give your forms to Val Watring at the August  meeting. And don’t forget the forms for the postcard challenge. If you have extra quilts please let Julie or Val know.  Or send Karen an email.  Right now, we don’t have enough quilts, pending what gets turned in at the guild meeting. Remember to enter all your challenges and circle the type of challenge on the form. If you participated in the Crayon Challenge or last month’s Fabric Challenge, make sure to write in CRAYON challenge or FABRIC challenge for those entries as we forgot them on the form.

As we have done for past shows, every member that comes to the Quilt Show and/or volunteers during the show will still pay a ONE time $5 admission donation at the admission table and make sure you check your name on the membership list. This is a one time donation if you come only one day or volunteer many times during show days.

Sign-up Sheets will be available at the meeting for setup for the Quilt show on 9/9/21 and to break it down on 9/12/21 and for volunteering for different positions listed below, during the 3 days of the event 9/10, 9/11, and 9/12.

By-Laws Section 8:  The Sunshine Committee shall notify members in case of illness or bereavement.  Cards will be sent; unless it is determined a blue basket is needed.

Blue Baskets:  When members lose a spouse or child, we support them by giving them fat quarters of fabric in their favorite colors.  The Sunshine Committee will supply the bag and card to be signed by the membership.

Come May every year my quilting comes to a screeching halt.  And every year I am surprised that it does.  Once the temperatures are high enough to sustain plants my time is outdoors rather than in.   By August when it is  time for fair, or September when we have a quilt show, I am chomping at the bit to get back to it.  I’ll be treading more cautiously this year due to a shoulder accident but can already feel the pull back to the fabric and thread. Such a yin/yang effect, this dueling passions that don’t seem to work well together.  Seems there is some vulnerability as well,  as a trip this summer to Chestnut Ridge Sewing indicated.  It is apparently dangerous to walk into a quilt shop after a sewing dry spell.  All the fabric looked so beautiful!   And the ideas started to flow!  Hope your summer has been more quilt productive than mine and that you have created lots of exciting new  projects.

Meeting Minutes:
At 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo welcomed everyone and several guests and returning members.

Program:  Chris introduced Cindy Casciato who is a teacher, designer, author and most importantly, a quilter with decades of experience teaching quilting and related topics.  Cindy has several publications that include Block Explosion, One Stitch Quilting, and Stash with Splash Quilts.  Cindy is also a pattern and quilting tool designer. If that wasn’t enough, some of you may know Cindy from the very successful Quilt Escape, Quilters Retreat, as she was the founder of that wonderful event that started back in 1994.

Cindy presented her lectured entitled “Behind the Seams” which revealed a simple way to rotary cut quilts without the time-consuming hassle that often includes adding 1/8″ measurements.  We discovered all the secrets to making quilts faster and with increased accuracy.  Cindy presented a huge trunk show as part of the lecture.  Cindy also shared multiple handouts to help us learn her techniques and she took the time to vend some of her magic tools this evening.  It was a fascinating and inspirational program!  Thank you, Cindy!!

President’s Report:   Chris took this opportunity to thank all the participants in the 2020 President’s Challenge:  Karen Neuschaefer, Val Watring, Marcy Delavan, Peggy Hughes, Helen Smelzer, Kaye Koler, and Merridee Pavlenko.  The challenge was to make a fabric postcard that embodied the spirit of one of your favorite vacations.   Chris was tasked with picking her favorite 3 that screamed vacation.  Chris admitted that they were all adorable and it was a very difficult decision.  However, she chose the postcards of Kaye Koler, Marcy Delavan, and Karen Neuschaefer.  These 3 ladies will receive a small gift card by email for winning.  Congratulation’s ladies!   Chris reminded everyone to include their postcard in the quilt show!

Unfinished Business:  Chris reported that she has enough volunteers signed up to help staff the guild’s booth at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo in Akron, Ohio in July.  Chris reminded everyone that the event will be held at the John S. Knight Center, in Akron, Ohio from Thursday, July 15th through Saturday 17th.   Chris also noted that the guild participates in this event to (1) to sell raffle tickets for our gorgeous quilt, and (2) to distribute postcards and advertise our quilt show!  Chris reminded the members who have volunteered to help that although they get into the show for free, they will have to pay for parking.  Make sure to check-in at the volunteer ambassador table for your name badge.  The guild booth is in the Vendor Hall Booth #112.  Stop by to say hello!

New Business:  There were multiple members who questioned whether or not we could change the start time of the meeting to 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. Chris indicated she was not against having a discussion on this topic, but several members in attendance pointed out that there are members who work during the day and the 7:00 p.m. start time was ideal.  Since Chris believes this issue was brought up in response to the May meeting which went very late, which was unusual, Chris noted that no action will be taken at this time.  However, Chris encouraged members to talk amongst themselves about this topic and if there was serious interest in possibly changing the start time of the meetings, this issue had to be brought to the floor as an official motion and seconded so there can be open discussion followed by a vote.  Chris noted that any change in start time would have to be passed by a majority of the members and the bylaws would have to be revised.

Announcements:  Chris reminded the group that during the day in July she will be hosting the annual Christmas in July sewing event.  Please plan on coming to sew the day away on a holiday project, Christmas gift, or bring one of your Fair entries or quilt show entries that you need to get finished!!  Oh, and bring a tray of cookies to share!!  Beverages will be supplied.  Watch your email for more details to come!  Good times will be had by all in attendance!  There will be games, prizes, and Christmas music

Show & Tell:  It was a fabulous showing this month!  Chris reported that she is still constantly amazed at the sheer talent in this group of quilters!!

Next meeting:  July 8, 2021 @ 7:00 p.m.  We will have Judy Pickworth from the Lorain County Fair to talk about what to expect this year in the Needlework Barn and our own Ruth Groot will also be talking about volunteer opportunities for set up and judging days.  If you have never participated in a county fair, come to find out what it’s all about!

Hello Quilters!  Thank you all for your efforts last month at the Judy Riggle Community Sew Day!  If you have items to turn in I will be at the Christmas in July sew day July 8th.  I also plan to be at the meeting in the evening.

If you’ve been on Facebook you already know that I have found an organization (A Better Christmas) which is a non profit in Lorain County. They would love some Christmas Stockings!  I will be bringing whatever Christmas fabric that is in the Community Service stash for anyone who would like to make stockings on July 8th.  I will be collecting stockings until November 1st if you would like to make them in the next few months.

I recently participated in helping to build beds for Good Knights of Lorain County.  They make beds so no one sleeps on the floor.  They will take quilts that are 66×90 if you are interested in making a quilt or two for them.  They are also working on a plan to make beds for 2 homes to house Veteran’s.  One will be for women and one for men.  The beds will be full size beds.  I will get more information to share with you in the near future but I thought that might be something we could provide.  Knowing several Veterans from different branches of the service, I think a generic red, white and blue quilt would be better than a specific service related quilt.

Quilt registration:
We need your quilt registrations in by the August  guild meeting. Please don’t wait til the last minute. That creates a lot of work typing up the quilt labels in a small amount of time for Karen. Send (313 Augusta Dr. Elyria, OH 44035) or email (krayon227@gmail. com) your registrations to Karen before the August meeting if you can not get it ready for the July meeting.

You may enter up to 4 quilts in the September Quilt Show plus any challenge quilt. So if you made 2 challenge quilts plus 4 other quilts for the show, you need to fill out 6 quilt  registrations.

Raffle Baskets:
What they need for the baskets are “notions” to add to the materials or ($)  “Money” to pay for notions, bows/wrappings. It’s these little things that sometimes make the baskets attractive to the quilt show attendees. Happy Independence Day my stitching and quilting friends!!  Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.  I will be spending the holiday weekend stitching on a couple of my Quilt Show entries to make sure they are all ready to go.  I’ve prepared my Quilt show entry forms to turn into Karen this month.  A few items are all done and a few more are “in progress.”  Making a serious commitment to get those babies done and ready for the September show.  I hope many of you are ready to turn in your forms to Karen at this month’s meeting.  The forms are not actually due until August; however, if you are ready, I know Karen would appreciate having them as early as possible. Both Karen and Julie are gearing up to make sure we have a fabulous show this year!

I’ve been advertising the show all across social media and I know our advertising guru Val has all kinds of advertisements in the works to get the word out to folks who don’t droll the internet.  Another fabulous way to advertise our show is word of mouth.  Please make sure you are telling your family and friends about our show.  I’ll do another big push in early September to remind everyone of the fabulous event we have planned.  Our quilt show is our biggest fundraiser and it allows us to keep the guild membership dues steady and our very reasonable $25 a year.   So, help me spread the word.

I hope to see many of you at the annual Christmas in July event this month!!  It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….

Meeting Minutes: At 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo welcomed everyone to the guild’s first in-person meeting in several months.  It was wonderful to see so many faces present, including a few guests!

Program:  Sue Schillig and Kelly Grace presented a fabulous program all about Hexies!  It was intriguing and entertaining!  Both ladies brought a different perspective to the topic which made it an amazing program!  The show-n-tell and project ideas were beyond fabulous!  Thank you again Sue and Kelly!

President’s Report:  Chris shared that the quilt will be hosting a booth at the upcoming Original Sewing and Quilting Expo that will be held at the John S. Knight Center, in Akron, Ohio from Thursday, July 15th through Saturday 17th.  Chris shared that the guild is hosting a both for two reasons:  (1) to sell raffle tickets for our gorgeous quilt, and (2) to distribute postcards and advertise our upcoming quilt show!  Chris asked for volunteers to sit at the booth to sell raffle tickets.

Chris also reported that with all the State Covid mandates ending on June 2nd, that would mean that masks are no longer required for our June meeting or at the June Community Sew Day.  However, Chris made it perfectly clear that if anyone is still more comfortable wearing a mask, that should feel comfortable doing so as this is a safe space.  Feel comfortable to BE YOU.

Finally Chris thanked the participants of the President’s Postcard Challenge and indicated that the winners would be announced at the June meeting.

Approval of the Minutes:  The minutes from the April meeting were distributed in the Newsletter by email and posted on the webpage.  Hearing no changes were necessary to the minutes, they were approved as distributed.

Treasurer’s Report:  The treasurer’s report was presented by Treasurer, Pam Scholle and will be included in this newsletter and filed for audit.

Committee Reports: The membership heard reports all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

Announcements:  Due to the guest speaker for August being Internationally renowned fabric designer, Deb Strain, Chris noted that all guests for August will have to pay $5 at the door.  Chris will be inviting other guilds to attend and all non-members will be expected to pay $5 at the door.  Deb will be vending and presenting a Trunk Show of her fabric lines and more!

Show & Tell:    It was beyond wonderful to see so many wonderful quilts and unique stitchy items live and in-person again.  We are so creative!!

Hello Quilters!
This Thursday is the Annual Judy Riggle Community Sew Day!  I have kits made up for quilt tops, pillow cases and a new item – large hot pads!  The hot pads are for the Country Store at the Quilt Show.

I have also received a huge influx of fabric so I will be bringing that with the idea that you can put together your own quilt top idea or a pillow case. I also have quite a bit of fleece that I will bring.  If you would like to make a blanket out of fleece please consider that option.

So, bring your cutting materials and your sewing machine!  We have lots of options.

And remember…there will be prizes!   Can’t wait to see you all there!

June is a busy month.  Many people will be celebrating Father’s Day, Flag Day and Juneteenth, some will be cheering for joy at the first “official” day of summer.   Personally, I am finding it hard to believe that it is actually June already.  I’m not sure where the past 5 months have gone, but we must keep moving forward.  As time quickly passes before my eyes, I turn to my stack of WIPS and pull a few to the top that need to be done for the Quilt Show.  Time to buckle down and get these quilts done!!   How about you?!? Are your quilts ready??  Oh, don’t get me started about my Fair projects…time to put the creativity in high gear!  So exciting!!  I just love that we have so much to celebrate and look forward.

Meeting Minutes: At 7:00 p.m. President Chris Yoo welcomed everyone to the guild’s virtual meeting conducted over ZOOM.

Program:  The Zoom program was part virtual quilt show and part story.  Some of you know that Chris had a bucket list trip to Sister’s Oregon planned in 2020 that was cancelled like most events due to the Pandemic.  Chris had been wanting to make this journey across the country for about 10 years, but only started planning it about 2 years ago.    She is planning to visit a small town in central Oregon called Sisters, to attend a 5-day quilting retreat called Quilter’s Affair that culminated in a massive outdoor Quilt Show the following Saturday.  Some of you have said you’ve heard of the event, while others have not.  Because it may be something YOU may want to add to your bucket list, Chris thought she would give you an overview of both the Quilter’s Affair and the Sister’s Outdoor Quilt Show by way of a slideshow and a few video clips.

During the presentation you first learned a little about the Quilt show and how they had to re-imagine the show for 2020; then everyone got to experience 3 of the Show’s Special Exhibits and then Chris closed the presentation by sharing a short slideshow presentation about the Quilter’s Affair event that precedes the Quilt Show.   In case you are interested, Chris saved some of the videos that you can access by clicking the following link:

President’s Report:  Chris noted that although she always relies on Julie Bragg to speak on the Quilt Show during Committee Reports, tonight she wanted to using her platform as your President to make sure everyone understands how important the Quilt Show is to the guild and how your participation is critical.

Chris wanted to remind long standing members and to inform the new members that the quilt show and the corresponding quilt raffle are the primary fund-raising events for the guild.  Although the quilt show has the potential to bring in much needed money to our guild, Chris pointed out that what people often don’t realize is that to put on a show we also SPEND thousands of dollars before the show even opens for things like hall rental, renting of the stands to hang the quilts, advertising, postcards, flyers, signs, food/snacks, raffle tickets, etc., etc.  If we spend all that money and don’t have a fabulous show, we run the risk of devastating our budget.  We have to put on a fabulous show and bring people in.

The quilt show is also the #1 way we introduce and reintroduce the community to our guild and all the good things we do for the community.  Chris noted that although she had not been a member long, she has had the pleasure of participating in several phenomenal quilt shows here where there have been close to 150 quilts and quilt related items on display. Because of the Pandemic Julie took an early headcount from members via email to find out who things they will have items for the quilt show.  Julie asked everyone to respond to say how many quilted items you “think” you will have.  Out of the almost 80 members we have now, only about 20 people replied and we have a total of approx. 54 items for the show.  YIKES and double YIKES. Some people shared that maybe people don’t think we will really have the show.

Well, just in case there is any doubt, WE ARE HAVING A QUILT SHOW September 10th through the 12th.  We desperately need YOU to enter at least one quilt or fiber arts item each.  However, Chris knows that many of you have many more items to enter.  They don’t have to be recently made items.  They just need to be something you have not already exhibited at one of our shows.  You can enter quilts, table runners, placemats, pot holders, art quilts, etc.

Also, we are going to need people agree to help hang the quilts on September 9th and take down the quilts on September 12th.  We also need people to make a commitment to be present during the show to represent the guild and to answer questions, make sure people aren’t touching the quilts, to take tickets at the front desk, sit at the quilt raffle table, help sell refreshments at the snack bar, etc.

None of the tasks we need help with are arduous or seriously labor intensive.  There is one day of setup and three wonderful quilt show days of sharing our love for quilting and fiber arts and representing our guild to the community.  These are 4 days that Chris said that she is so proud to be a member of this fabulous guild.

So, if you have not done so already, Chris basically begged everyone to take 10 minutes to send Julie an email or give her a quick call or TEXT her to let her know she has your support.  Tell her what items you THINK you will have for the show and let her know you’ll gladly give a few hours of your time or even a day if possible, to help out. Zoom Etiquette:  Once the program begins, please keep your microphone MUTED at all times unless you have a question or are answering a question.   Remember that we hear everything, including your munching on crackers, clearing your throat, or yelling at your spouse or grandkids (wink wink).  Keep your microphone muted please.

Daytime Stitching:  April 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Even if you don’t have something to sew, you are welcome to stop by and say hello to those of us who are there.  There are typically only a handful of us, and with our giant space, keeping socially distant is not a problem LOL.  Just remember to wear a mask.    We would love to have a few more stitchy friends stop by!!

Hello all!  The month of March was big for quilt donations!  We gave a dozen to the Mercy Health Resource Mothers.  They would have taken more but just didn’t have the space.  We also presented 30 to Lorain County Children’s Services.  Both organizations were thrilled with the quilts!

Our Community Sew Day is fast approaching!  I’ve got some fun and exciting things planned to encourage participation and thank everyone for their support.  Take care and keep on quilting!

Tulips remind me of Holland and the Dutch. Dutch reminds me of Pennsylvania Dutch.  And if you think about Pennsylvania Dutch long enough, you might just think about hex signs. And if you think about hex signs, perhaps hexies will come to mind and you’ll want to make some! Kelly Grace and I will show a couple different ways to piece them.  Kelly will show the English paper piecing method and provide a sample for you to try if you like.  If you’d like to try it, bring a needle and some thread and scissors. I will show how to draw your own hexagon of any size and explain how to cut and machine piece them using Mary Huey’s method and the Marti Michell templates.   I know some of you have already done hexies, so bring some to the May meeting to show them off!

UFO Challenge

Due to the cancelation of the many meetings, our prizes will be handed out at the next meeting that we are actually together. Looks like this might be in May! Great job on all the completed projects in 2020!

We are up to 9 finishes from the UFO lists! Great start to 2021 UFO’s. Please remember that we ask for $5 to go toward prizes at the end of the year, this can wait until we meet again or you can send me a check or cash.

Fat Quarter Exchange
Please think about participating this year, it’s fun picking fabrics out for others! Sign-ups will start now (or the first month we meet next) – if you know what color/theme you’d like let me know and I’ll put you on the list. Sign-ups will continue until the end of May – lists will be sent out and fat quarters will be due back in August.

String Challenge
The idea of the Strip Quilt Challenge is to use up scraps, in this case, strips. Helen says she has plenty to get shed of, so you may want to contact her if you run low. The deadline is the August meeting, there will be a drawing for a prize, and it will be fun to see what recycling yields. By the way, you don’t have to use jelly roll strips, just whatever strippy beings you have and are keen to use up:

That second item or a new fat quarter that you now realize you will never use in a quilt can be a much desirable item in one of our Raffle Baskets for our September Quilt Show.

Committee Report:   Meeting minutes: Thanks to Jean Tobias for gathering quilt blocks and delivering them to Mom’s Sewing Basket in my absence.

Newsletter Update:

Previously reported:  Darlene Shimandle passed away.  We offer sincere condolences to our member and Darlene’s husband, Mike!
Darlene’s store:  Mom’s Sewing Basket is still accepting 6.5 inch and 12.5 inch quilt blocks as remembrances of Darlene.

UPDATE:  They are aiming for a May 1st deadline for submissions.  It would be helpful if your block was in a ziplock baggie and had a note/slip with your name and address. There may be enough blocks to make a quilt for Mike and one for Mike and Darlene’s daughter.

In lieu of a blue basket; if a guild member wishes to donate fat quarters, the fat quarters will likely be used for sashing and/or pieced for backing for Darlene’s Memorial Quilt.  You may send or deliver your fat quarter to Mom’s Sewing Basket.  If we have an April 8th sewing day and/or meeting; we can collect fat quarters at Russia Township Hall. I am willing to collect and deliver blocks or fat quarters if you give me (Val) a call or text:  440.935.0972.

By-Laws Section 8:  The Sunshine Committee shall notify members in case of illness or bereavement.  Cards will be sent; unless it is determined a blue basket is needed.

Blue Baskets:  When members lose a spouse or child, we support them by giving them fat quarters of fabric in their favorite colors.  The Sunshine Committee will supply the bag and card to be signed by the membership.

Are you ready for some SPRING?  I’m hoping the recent snow we had is the last of it, but perhaps I just jinxed us?!  Hope not!  I would rattle on about flowers and gardening here, but ladies and gents, I don’t have a green thumb.  All my hobbies are indoors.  The closest I get to nature is throwing open the windows in my craft room so the breeze can blow through, and I’m perfectly happy with that.  Although I do help my hubby with the flower beds, I much prefer stitching or appliqueing flowers.

Well, as we talked in our last zoom meeting, we are only 5 months away from our QUILT SHOW (September 10th, 11th, and 12th).  I hope you have been working on a treasure trove of items and have many beautiful things to display in the show. I see the show as a way of promoting interest in quilting and perhaps generating a desire for others to begin their own quilting journey.  Remember, we did get several new members from the last quilt show.

I’m going to start bringing the Raffle Quilt to Township Hall every month from now until the show as a way to remind everyone and so you can pick up raffle tickets for yourself and others.  Remember, you have to pay for the tickets in advance—even if you plan on selling them to others.  That way our accounting is kept straight and there are no mistakes.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5; 12 tickets for $10, or 18 tickets for $15, or 24 tickets for $20—cash or check payable to LCP.

I’m planning on April being our last Zoom meeting.  You will get the Zoom invite by email by Monday or Tuesday.  Remember on April 8th we will be sewing and quilting all day at the Township Hall from 10 am to 5pm.   The zoom meeting will open up at 6:30 p.m. for socializing, then the meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.  Beginning in May, we will be holding all meetings in-person at the Hall. With everyone getting vaccinated, I hope to see you all again soon.  However, I make these plans with full knowledge that life changes on a dime, so fingers crossed, keep smiling, and quilt on my friends!!
