Meeting Minutes:
Chris Yoo

1. Welcome.  At 7:00 p.m. on May 9, 2024, Chris welcomed members and a few guests.

2. Program:  Tonight, we welcomed Sew 4 Service (S4S).  The mission of S4S is to build a community of service-minded, creative people who sew, quilt, crochet, and knit.  Like our guild, they donate items to local charities for both people and pets.  They shared that they have a fabulous shop called The Fabric Stash Store where you can find serious deals on fabric, notions, and sewing machines. The store is located at the Shore Cultural Centre, 291 East 222nd St., Room 115 in Euclid, Ohio 44123. They are open Tues. and Thurs. from Noon – 6pm. and Sat., from 10am to 2pm.  They have a website for the group at http://www.sew4service.org. It was a fabulous presentation!  If you missed it, check out their website and store!

3. President’s Message: Chris extended a Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and grandmas in the room, whether they have 2 legged or 4 legged kids.

Chris went on to share exciting news, that she could not hold for old business.  Chris shared that member Holly Francis has thrown her hat for the office of President.  Chris also reminded everyone that last month member Marcy Delavan also volunteered to be the guild secretary. Chris noted that if anyone else would like to be considered for a position, to let her know before the June meeting as they will hold an official election in June for the two new executive officers, and there will be an official re-appointment of the Vice President, Margaret Miller, and Treasurer, Sue Schillig.

4. Approval of Minutes:  The minutes from the April meeting were distributed by Kelly Grace.  After a call for corrections or changes, having heard none, the minutes were approved as distributed.

5. Treasurer’s Report (Sue Schillig). The treasurer’s report is filed for audit.  All questions about the finances of the guild should be directed to Sue.

6. Committee Reports: The membership heard reports from all Committees that were present.  The Committee Chairpersons will submit their individual reports to Kelly Grace for inclusion in the newsletter no later than the Saturday before the next meeting.  For up-to-date information from the Committees, please review the individual Committee Reports noted in this newsletter.

7. Unfinished or On-Going Business:  See President’s Message above, and Chris talked about the 2024 Raffle Quilt, which was on display this evening.  Chris reminded everyone that if they wish to sell tickets, they have to pre-buy them and resale them so the guild is not printing tickets and not recuperating the money.

8. New Business:    Chris noted that they will need a new 2025 Raffle Quilt and anyone interested should step forward, and it was noted that Julie Bragg has already submitted a suggestion and if there are no others, we will most likely go with

9. Announcements:   There was a brief discussion of the upcoming Quilt Camp @ Cedar Lakes as the registration was now open on their website.  The camp is October 6 – 11, 2024,

10. Show-n-Tell:  There were small quilts, and large quilts, and everything in between.  Keep up the fantastic quilting!!

11. Adjournment:  The group was reminded that in June during the day will be the annual Judy Riggle Community Sew Day.  Margaret Miller invited everyone to come and spend the day sewing. There will be material, batting, patterns and kits available to sew. We will need people to sew, sandwich, bind, cut, iron. Many hands make light work. We will have plenty of snacks for you to enjoy and there will be a drawing at the meeting for all that participate that day—If you cannot come to the all day sew and bring something you made to donate to Community Service Projects, you can enter at the meeting. If you are a Long Armer and take a quilt to quilt for Community Service, you can enter. It is our way of saying thank you for all our Lorain County Piecemaker’s who contribute to serve our community.

PM Program:   The Giving Doll.   We will have several ladies from the LaGrange Chapter coming to share their mission and their wonderful dolls.   The send many of their dolls to Genesis House, Blessing House and many other county entities that serve children in crisis.   Some of their dolls have also traveled the world.   The story of Giving Doll is very interesting.  It all started in Norton, Ohio.   They have been very appreciative of the donations of 24” x 24” doll quilts and the doll bags made by our members.  Any doll quilts or bags made or turned in on Judy Riggle Sew Day will be presented to them at the meeting.

SEE YOU ON JUNE 13TH!!

I find it hard to believe it’s already June!
So, in preparation for veteran quilt presentations this fall,
The Honor Quilts committee has planned a sew day for
              Thursday, August 8th,
                               10-4,
                      at the lodge.

We have a few blocks left from the last call for blocks. But can use some more! If you are so inclined to make some we would love that and can definitely use them. Thank you!!

The rules are simple for the blocks.

  • A star block.
  • 6 1/2 unfinished (preferred) OR
  • 12 1/2 unfinished in sets of four
  • red white and blue only

It’s a brown bag lunch.
We hope you can join us!
Thank you so much! We know summer is a busy time and we are very grateful for all your help!

The HONOR QUILTS committee,
Kaye, Helen and Teri

Notes from the President
Chris Yoo

Happy June!!!  As we enter the growing season of June, I have mixed feelings as I find myself having to mow the lawn for the first time in my life.  Shocker.  My hubby is recuperating from a successful surgery but he is restricted from mowing for a month or two.  So, as I ride the tractor around mowing our property, I’m contemplating what I COULD be doing up in that sewing room if I wasn’t out here breathing in grass pollen.

Every turn of the mower I catch a glimpse of the window to my sewing room, and it taunts me.  I decide to mow the other direction so I would not have to look at it (smile).  After that I thought, hmmm, I wonder what hubby would do if I mowed a quilt pattern into the lawn?  Well, since I did not want to cause him to freak out and hurt himself, I filed that idea away for another day.

So, think of me every sunny Saturday or Sunday morning as that’s when I’ll be spending two hours of my precious weekend sulking and scowling on the mower, occasionally gazing up at my sewing room window with much anticipation.

Challenges
Kelly Grace

UFO Challenge

Based on what I have today we are up to 11% of the quilts submitted that are now completed (55/509). Everyone is making great progress on their UFO’s! Please remember that $5 is due to me when you sign up, if you haven’t already given this to me you can see me at the next meeting. This is to help with prizes that are given out at the December meeting – You must complete at least one of your UFO’s to be included for prizes.

Fat Quarter Exchange
Lists were sent out to those that signed up on April 5th. If you did not receive the list or your bags at the May meeting please see me at the June meeting. This exchange is where you buy or shop your stash for a fat quarter for each person on the list, based on what type/color of fabric they are looking for.

Monthly Challenge
New challenge was issued at the April meeting – Use a song (favorite line or song title) as the inspiration for a quilted item – any size! Since our meeting was so late this will be due at the June meeting.

New challenge for the summer is to make scrappy 4-patch quilt blocks from charm packs. These will be turned in at the August meeting and I’ll put them together and quilt them for community service. Easy directions are from MSQC and can be found on Youtube

Secret Santa Exchange
Secret Santa Exchange turned out awesome, sign-ups for the 2024 exchange will happen in July – there will be LOTS of time to make your gifts.

Block Exchange
I currently only have 1 person other than myself that have signed up for the block exchange. I’d like to get 6-10 members signed up. If I don’t have enough by the June meeting this will be put on hold until next year. Fabrics are posted below and I know they will be available at Sew Creative Cottage. I will have an example from the last exchange at the meeting.

President’s Challenge
As Chris’s last challenge, she requested that you make a name tag. It must be something new – not something you already made.
